Course Overview

The Executive Diploma in Enterprise Risk, Governance & ESG Leadership is designed for senior leaders, board members, executives and governance professionals who need to provide effective oversight of enterprise risk, strategic uncertainty, ESG responsibilities and organisational resilience.

This executive-level course focuses on risk from a board and leadership perspective. It is not designed as a technical risk management programme. Instead, it helps leaders understand how risk governance should operate, how risk informs strategic choices, how appetite and accountability guide decision-making, and how assurance and reporting support effective oversight.

Across six modules, learners explore enterprise risk governance, strategy and value creation, risk appetite, ESG and sustainability risk, assurance coverage, board reporting and leadership under uncertainty. The course uses executive framing models to support practical board-level thinking, challenge and decision-making.

Learners begin with the Board Risk Oversight Operating Model, examining the relationship between the board, committees, executives, assurance providers and reporting loops. This helps clarify who owns risk, who challenges management, what evidence is required, and what should be escalated. The course then introduces the Risk–Return–Resilience Triangle, helping leaders evaluate strategic choices by considering value upside, downside exposure and resilience capacity.

The programme also explores risk appetite and accountability through the Risk Appetite Stack, showing how principles, appetite statements, limits, indicators and escalation actions connect. ESG and sustainability are addressed through the Double Materiality Governance Map, helping leaders consider both financial materiality and wider impact materiality, alongside ownership, metrics and reporting.

Later modules focus on assurance, oversight and board reporting using the Assurance Map + Coverage Matrix, enabling leaders to identify areas of over-assurance, under-assurance and blind spots. The final module addresses leadership through uncertainty using the Executive Decisions Under Uncertainty Cycle, supporting defensible decision-making when information is incomplete, conditions are changing and trade-offs are unavoidable.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to provide more effective board-level oversight of enterprise risk, challenge management constructively, connect risk with strategy and value creation, interpret risk appetite and ESG responsibilities, evaluate assurance coverage, and lead through uncertainty with greater confidence and discipline.
